Taught by Shan Wichman from Greener Partners
Shan Wichmann, an employee of Greener Partners, is the Farm Manager at Deaver Wellness Farm at Lankenau Hospital where they connect patients facing food insecurity with fresh food. Their path into herbalism has grown from a deep curiosity about plants as medicine and food as medicine. They are largely self-taught, learning through friends, books, hands-on experimentation, and a lifelong love of the natural world. It feels essential to acknowledge that much of the plant wisdom we draw from today originates with Indigenous peoples, who first cultivated, cared for, and worked with many of the herbs we now use and benefit from.
Many of the plants featured in this workshop grow abundantly here in Pennsylvania, and several are native to this region. Their own herbal practice began with a desire for simpler, more natural ingredients in their skincare routine. Making their own infusions and extractions opened the door to a much wider world of learning—one that they are still exploring.
